Conventional wisdom concerning the draft is that when a team has an opportunity to claim a quarterback with an apparent future, it has to take him. The 49ers have to heed it; they have no other options. They almost certainly would prefer to trade out of the No. 1 position, but in this draft there is not the franchise player whose availability would prompt their rivals to bid strongly for the ranking choice. Thus the Niners have to decide whom they prefer: Alex Smith or Aaron Rodgers. Rodgers, being from Cal, has a local identity, which could tip matters to him.
